Enrico Rava  – trumpet

Contemporary Italian jazz can be said to have begun with Enrico Rava. "When I first started, I was the only one," he says. "For many years there were no musicians, no concerts, no audience."

Born in Trieste in 1939, he started playing trombone in Dixieland bands and changed to trumpet after hearing Miles Davis.

The British reference book "Jazz: The Rough Guide" describes him as a "fiery trumpet player, capable of handling anything from abstraction to conventional song structures and orchestral work."

Rava first attracted international attention in the 1960s playing concerts and making movie soundtracks with the Argentine star Gato Barbieri.  After that, he split his time between Italy, Buenos Aires and New York, working with Carla Bley, Lee Konitz, Mal Waldron, Gil Evans, Cecil Taylor, Pat Metheny, Miroslav Vitouš, Joe Lovano, Paul Motian, John Abercombie and many others.

Rava is an ECM recording artists since 1975 and will receive the 2018 Bohemia Jazz Award for his life time contribution to the art of jazz.
