Alex Tassel Quartet (F)

The United States might be the birthplace and still remain the centre of contemporary jazz, but year by year, the presence is shifting towards different parts of the world. And renowned European jazz has, especially recently, stirred much attention in Scandinavia, Poland and France, the country where trumpet player Alex Tassel comes from.

The thirty-four years old graduate of the Rouen Conservatory came to Paris in the second half of ‘90s and met a number of modernly orientated musicians who were trying to find new ways of expression while oscillating between jazz mainstream and electronic fusion, sometimes even with a bit of dance music. Not by accident; Paris, a long-time cultural crossover, seems to be the ideal place for combining genres.

Tassel, today already a mature musician with his own tone and expression, worked with major French artists of the older generations, including world renowned guitarist Biréli Lagrène or experienced Americans in Paris: Marcus Miller, Rick Margitza, David Murray and others.

During that time, he’s also shown much interest and understanding for the hip-hop scene, which is how he met drummer Manu Katché, an established sideman of Peter Gabriel, Sting and saxophonist Jan Garbarek. Katché has been working with Tassel for a number of years and he also contributed to the trumet player’s latest recording, Movements (2008), which includes a line-up of pianist Laurent de Wilde, bassist Diego Imbert and another drummer, Julien Charlet.
