Prachatice is a city in South Bohemia the roots of which date back to the 11th century. It has 12 000 inhabitants and a rich history. As an important trading crossroads between Germany and Austria the town prospered in large part thanks to a salt transshipment station (16th and 17th century). When salt started to flow by a different route, the town burned down a number of times and became very poor (19th century). Prachatice today has a good many carefully restored Renaissance monuments. The area around Prachatice is very picturesque. It is near Šumava National Park. The typical South Bohemian cuisine has a very good reputation among visitors.
