České Budějovice is the largest city in South Bohemia and its history goes back to the 13th century. It is an exceptional place where Gothic architecture meets with the Renaissance and Baroque. The city can pride itself on monuments not found anywhere else, for example a Medieval Gothic cabin or the precursor to European railways. A number of places are accompanied by exciting legends. There are 100 000 inhabitants in Budějovice, as well as a university, a number of galleries, and a theatre, the repertoire of which frequently includes operas and operettas. The area around the city provides visitors with many possibilities for fine trips, good beer, and traditional South Bohemian cuisine. Not far from České Budějovice lies one of the most visited Czech chateaus Hluboká nad Vltavou.
